There are some things that every blogger and ads publisher should do, regardless of what they are blogging about, or what their reason for blogging is.
If you follow these top 10 things that every blogger should do, not only will your blog be more enjoyable to read, but you will quickly gain popularity in the blogging community and your AdSense revenue will increase manyfold.
1. Enjoy Writing
In order to be a successful blogger, you will need to enjoy writing. If you don’t enjoy writing it is going to come out in your writing style, and could throw some readers off.
However, if you are passionate about something, and would still like to blog, you may consider audio blogging or video blogging as an alternative to writing.
2. Know Your Blogging Platform
There are a few different platforms for bloggers the most popular ones being wordpress, blogger, and typepad. Each has their own functionality and options. Be sure you understand how the administrative tools work and how you can optimize each post to make it search engine friendly and entertaining for your reader.
3. Check your Spelling
This cannot be stressed enough… Nobody’s perfect, and one or two slight misspelling or typos is not a big problem, however – no1 wats 2 reed a blug tat it riten lik dis noe du tey? (translation – no one wants to read a blog that looks like this now do they?) So, always be sure to check your spelling and make sure that at least the majority of your post is readable and understandable.
4. Write Unique Content
I have seen many, many blogs which are using things like Caffeinator, AutoBlogger, WPRobot, and various other auto blogging programs to add content to their blog every day. This is NOT a good idea. Some reasons it is not a good idea are: your blog could be “sandboxed” by google (this means removed from the listing), it doesn’t look professional, and it is just plain stealing from those writers who actually wrote the post in the first place.
Also, when you do write original content for your blog, no one will pay attention to it, as all the other posts are just stolen from somewhere else.
For those of you using the “But all sorts of people are making money using autoblogging programs” argument out there.. Trust me.. You will make more money in the long run by simply writing your own unique content and then you won’t have to worry about google “sandboxing” your site.
5. Allow Users to Subscribe
You want to be sure you blog has a prominent SUBSCRIBE or orange RSS button so readers can subscribe to your blog and come back to visit when you post new content. It is also very important to set up your feed so that it only send a portion of the post to the users reader. This way they have to actually come to your blog to read the post. This is especially important for affiliate marketers who are monetizing the blog.
6. Research Your Articles or Know What You are Talking About
I don’t know how many articles I have come across that were just plain WRONG.. The person that was writing the article really didn’t know what they were talking about and obviously didn’t research the topic at all. This is very bad blogging practice. If you have a post that has inaccurate information, people will notice, and then not return to your blog, because you will have lost credibility.
Unless your goal is to have a humorous blog site where the info is supposed to be wrong, it is a very bad idea to put any sort of inaccurate data in a blog post. If you don’t know about the topic research it to make sure you get the information right.
7. Try and Post Everyday, or at Least on a Set Schedule
One thing will kill a blog faster than anything else. Not posting consistently. People go to blogs to see what’s new. If nothing is new for a while then they won’t go back.
It is hard to post new content every day, but it really isn’t necessary to post every day. You can post once a week, once even once a month, as long as long as your readers know there is going to be new content and when it is going to be there.
If you have a busy schedule or perhaps forget to post blogs, you can write up a bunch of posts and set them to post at a later date in WordPress. This is a very useful feature if you are like me and have many projects on the go at once, and forget to make a post for a day or two.
8. Maintain your Blog and Keep it Spam Free
If you have an open blog where anyone can comment or make posts, make sure you maintain it and keep it spam free. Nobody likes to read about breast enlargement pills or Air Jordans when they are trying to read the latest comments on a blog post.
If you have a large blog with many posts, you can get some Plugins, such as Askimet for WordPress, to help you control the amount of spam posts that your blog receives.
Making it necessary to create an account to post or comment is another great way to cut down on spam. It may deter some people from writing, but on the whole if a person is really interested in writing something, they will take the minute or so it will take to create an account.
9. Quality and Not Quantity Make the Blog
I have seen many blogs that go on the “more is better” theory. There is one problem with this. The blog posts were utter nonsense and well, just plain garbage. Out of the 10,000 or so posts they had, maybe a couple of hundred were actually good quality.
More people will go to your blog, and come back to your blog if you have good quality posts. If you only post one good quality post to your blog per day, I guarantee that in the long run you will get more visitors, which will translate into more revenue for those of you looking to make money, and they will keep coming back because the information was useful.
If you post 1,000 garbage articles a day, people won’t come back, and they won’t even stick around long enough to click on an ad. There is also a good chance you will loose ranking and SEO value since google is very in tune to this type of content stuffing. You could get dropped right out of the results.
10. Add Internal Links
Adding internal links from one blog post to another will keep readers around and add ranking to your blog. If you are writing a post about the “Top 10 Reasons to Blog” and you are explaining monetization, you may want to link to another post you have written on “How to Monetize Your Blog”, and so on. Readers will follow the links and have a chance to read more posts. This keeps them on the site longer and offers more opportunities for them to click on ads. This is also beneficial in ranking with google since they do give weight to the anchor text of your links (these are the words you actually use as the link text). Be sure the word or words you are using in your anchor text are keywords or text that let’s the user know what they are linking to. You don’t want to use phrases like “Click Here” or “Go There Now” since they don’t really tell the search engine anything about the link. In the above example you would you the words “monetize your blog” as the anchor text for your link.
So there you have it, some simple steps, but if you follow them you will soon become a successful blogger.
